Summer Course: Sustainable Development Law in China
Opportunities for foreign students: June 10 to June 21 2007
The Australian Centre for Environmental Law (ACEL Sydney) in the Faculty of Law, University of Sydney, and the Environmental and Resources Law Institute, School of Law, Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJU), in collaboration with the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law, are offering an intensive course in Sustainable Development Law in China, from 10 June to 21 June 2007. The course includes several field trips. The course is available for credit to towards postgraduate and undergraduate degree students and JD students by arrangement with their faculties.
The course takes place on the SJU campus in Shanghai, coordinated by Professor Wang Xi, Nicola Franklin and Professor Ben Boer. This course was initiated in 1994 and since then has been held every two years. It forms part of the following University of Sydney Environmental Law postgraduate courses: Master of Environmental Law; Master of Environmental Science and Law ; Graduate Diploma in Environmental Law
Lectures are given by Chinese and Australian Environmental Law Professors on a range of environmental law issues, including Climate Change, Energy Law, EIA Law, Land Management Law, Environmental Litigation, Water Law and Water Resources Management, International Trade, Heritage law, Soil Pollution Prevention, Access to Genetic Resources and Protected Areas Law. The lecturers include Professor Wang Xi, Director of the Environmental and Resources Law Institute, SJU, and Professor Wang Canfa, Professor at the China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing, and Director of the Center for Legal Assistance to Pollution Victims.
Field Trips
There is a field trip to Nanjing, Hangzhou and Suzhou, including lectures on local heritage protection. There are also field trips to the Shanghai Steelworks and to an EPA.
Living expenses and field trips
The fee for living expenses and field trips in China includes all accommodation, meals and local transportation. Participants are responsible for their own international travel and transfers.

IUCN Academy of Environmental Law
This year, the course is being held in collaboration with the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. Some of the professors in the course are from Chinese IUCN Academy of Environmental Law member universities. During the first week of the course, a meeting of Chinese IUCN Academy of Environmental Law member universities will be conducted, and future initiatives of the Academy in China will be discussed. This meeting will be chaired by Ben Boer, the international co-director of the Academy.
