FOUR MLIC LIBRARIANS RECEIVE SEVEN CONTINUING EDUCATION GRANTS! by Lou Lindsey 6/19/02

Four of the MLIC librarians have received a total of seven sizable grants, subsidizing some or all of their way to attend professional meetings and educational opportunities starting in June, 2002 and continuing this Fall.

First, Faye Hadley received an Ed Edmondson Memorial Scholarship which paid the registration fee for the Sovereignty Symposium XV 2002: Language and The Law (War of Words) in Oklahoma City early June. Click here to read a report she wrote after attending the conference. Faye is the College of Law's Native American Law Resources/Instructional Services Law Librarian.

Faye has also received a grant to attend the coveted TRIALL conference in Orlando, Florida mid July. TRIALL, which stands for "Teaching Research In American Law Libraries" is cosponsored by LEXIS/NEXIS and the American Association of Law Libraries. As part of this conference, she will explore with the 29 other selected participants such topics as: Librarian's Role as a Changing Environment; Introduction to Adult Learning; Teachable Moments; Developing Curricula; Developing Class/Course Materials; Presentation Skills; Evaluating Courses and Programs; and Politics.

Another workshop slated for Orlando in mid July is the Intermediate Cataloging for Law Librarians. Public Services/Serials Law Librarian Christy Ryan was the winner of an Educational Grant from the Technical Services Special Interest Section of the American Association of Law Libraries to attend this seminar. Christy attended the Basic Law Cataloging workshop in Chicago this year, the prerequisite to this conference.

Technology/Reference Law Librarian Daniel Bell will be attending a pre-conference session for new law librarians and the annual meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries, also in Orlando in mid July. Dan has received grants for these two meetings from the national organization itself, as well as one of its chapters and a special interest group. Dan will be giving a presentation at AALL's annual meeting on special features of our homepage which aid the visually impaired. It will be Dan's first time to attend the American Association of Law Libraries annual meeting.

Government Documents/Collection Development Law Librarian Melanie Nelson is the recipient of one of only five of the West Group Excellence in Law Librarianship scholarships. This funding will assist Melanie in pursing her law degree while working as a law librarian.

Congratulations to all these librarians: Faye, Dan, Christy and Melanie for being recognized by professional law librarian and legal organizations and vendors in competitive bids for limited funding for support for educational opportunities! We are proud of you!
