Capote - The Film

CapoteThose of you curious about criminal law will be interested in this film about the murder of a Kansas farm family and its translation into a new art form, the fictional account of a factual tragedy. This movie studies Truman Capote as he insinuates himself into a crime scene investigation, into the lives of the accused murders and into the convicted murders' journey to their executions. Capote was consumed with creating his book, In Cold Blood, and all his obsequious efforts were centered on getting the material he needed. Phillip Seymour Hoffman won an Academy Award for his role as Capote and the film was nominated for Best Picture.

Check out Capote or some of our other law-related feature films on DVD after finals or to take a break from your intense study sessions. A list of our DVDs and other videos can be found on the MLIC's homepage.Melanie Nelson 12/15/2006

Juicing the Game
Juicing the Game : drugs power and the fight for the soul of Major League Baseball - by Steven Lubet.  ". . .Bryant gives the full history behind the steroids scandal that has slowly but steadily enveloped major-league baseball over the past 10 years, a scandal that now calls into serious question the integrity of many of the records set during that time, if not the integrity of the game itself.(full review)

Lawyer's Poker
Lawyer's Poker : 52 lessons that lawyers can learn from card players - by Howard Bryant.  ""Great poker players are master tacticians. "Six months after Merritt joined the law practice of the delightfully corrupt (and memorably named) Thaddeus Silk, Silk died of a heart attack. It might have been a promising development for Merritt--just months out of law school, he'd inherited an entire firm--except Silk's office was soon under investigation from both the Oregon Bar Association and the cops." The King of LiesThe King of Lies-by John Hart. "Hart's stunning debut, an exceptionally deep and complex mystery thriller, compares favorably to the best of Scott Turow." (full review)

TU Law Welcomes New Students at Pre-Registration Day
Welcome to Class of 2009Dean Robert Butkin welcomed many incoming Class of 2009 students to a full "Pre-Registration" Day at the College of Law and the Allen Chapman Activity Center on Saturday June 17, 2006. After the Dean's welcome, students and their families who came as guests heard from librarians Lou Lindsey and Dan Bell, from Nellie Mae's Regional Account Executive Michelle Howard, from the Student Bar Association President, Luke Gramlich, and from Virginia Richard, the College of Law Registrar. A panel of "Student Ambassadors" fielded questions from the audience, touching on the hottest issues ranging from "Where's the closest Starbucks?" to what kind of computer to bring. Faculty and staff joined in the morning events and enjoyed meeting prospective students and their families informally over lunch.

TU Student Ambassadors PanelIn the John Rogers Hall Commons, student organizations enticed the Class of 2009 with displays about their activities. An array of concurrent programs on such topics as certificate programs, Career Services, student publications, financial aid, student health, housing, technology, and study abroad programs filled the early afternoon hours before a cool ice cream social concluded the day. It was a wonderful day planned by College of Law Admissions, and it provided a first opportunity for the Class of 2009 to get acquainted while getting many questions answered.

Student Organizations Welcome New StudentsAdmissions was pleased that 123 students enrolled Saturday. The MLIC librarians were pleased that some incoming students checked out books on the Suggested Reading List, just one more way to get ready for The Foundations of Legal Study, the mandatory orientation, which is slated for August 13-17. Kendall Court 2006 A Success
Fifth grade students from Tulsa's Kendall Whittier elementary school decided Cinderella's fate Friday, March 3, at a mock trial held at University of Tulsa College of Law.

The case of "Cinderella verses Estate of Padre Mia Tremaine" was presented in full costume by Phi Delta Phi Honors Fraternity members. Witnesses included Cinderella, her stepmother and stepsisters, and the prince. A judge presided over the court with attorneys for both the plaintiff and defendant present as fifth graders determined the fate of their favorite childhood fairy tale character. The jury retired to the Dean's Conference Room to deliberate, and after presenting the verdict the youngsters had a chance to ask questions. "Why were you so mean to Cinderella?" ernestly asked one jury member of the stepmother afterwards.

While half the group was participating in PDP's trial, the others toured the Mabee Legal Information Center, and learned from librarian Kathy Kane about the constitution, branches of government, and even heard the opening of oral arguments in a Supreme Court case against the Vice President. They explored governmental web sites for kids with librarian Mira Greene. Two members of NALSA, Leslie Dubois and Candice Freeman, intrigued them with a tour of the Native American Law Center. Librarians who led groups were Faye Hadley, Karen Bouteller, Courtney Selby, Lou Lindsey, and Dan Bell.

After the tour and trial, amidst pizza, milk and cookies, the fifth graders were given Kendall Court t-shirts, which they proudly got autographed front and back by the Cinderella cast and TU football players. Lou Lindsey 3/13/6

CAPITOL MURDER by William Bernhardt

MLIC Chili TeamLocal attorney and best-selling mystery author William "Bill" Bernhardt was at the 21st St. Borders Saturday for a book signing of his latest 2006 mystery CAPITOL MURDER. I bought his autographed book, and thanks to a sleet storm and a fire in the fireplace, read it from cover to cover the following day! The MLIC has several of Bernhardt's novels, including this, the latest. It's a fast read, featuring Tulsa law partners, Bill Kincaid and Christina McCall, called to defend Oklahoma's U.S. senator in a murder trial on the heels of a sex scandal. The novel's setting in Washington D.C. alternates between an exciting trial (no wonder Library Journal calls Bernhardt the "master of courtroom drama") and the equally exciting adventures of their firm's private investigator, whose adventures in the seedy part of town produce alternate theories for the murder. The book is well written and has "it all:" crime, scandal, vampires, "escort" services, even a love story. No hints about the surprise ending! William Bernhardt is the invited keynote speaker for the annual meeting of law librarians from eight states which is being planned by Prof. Ducey and the MLIC librarians in October.Lou Lindsey 2/20/06

Chilifest A Success!

TU Law Honors George Justice
TU Law SchoolGeorge Justice Reception honored Assistant Dean of Admissions George Justice at a reception on February 1, 2006 in the Pit. George is leaving his position after six years of service to the law school community. George has been a wonderful presence at the law school since he began working at TU on February 1, 2000 where he has led a very successful admissions department. George is known for his generous nature and friendly demeanor and was instrumental in helping to promote the use of students in the recruiting process, particularly in relationship building. The law school decided that the best way to honor George’s service to the legal community was to establish an award that will be presented to a student each year who best personifies George’s example of service to others. The George A. Justice Student Ambassador Service Award has been established and will be presented to a deserving student annually. During his tenure as Dean of Admissions, the student body of TU Law grew in diversity, reputation, and talent. Many students have remarked that they chose to attend TU Law because of George Justice. George has come to be associated with TU Law recruiting and will be sorely missed at recruiting fairs around the country.George Justice Reception We will miss George greatly, but we certainly wish him well as he moves on.
