TU Law Student Chad Burris Produces Sundance Film
Chad Burris (TU Law 3L) produced the film "Goodnight Irene," a 13 minute dramatic short that will be screened at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival this year. The film, which was shown here at TU Law last October, tells the story of three Seminole patients who share some laughs and poignant truths as they wait for treatment at the local Indian hospital. The film was written and directed by Oklahoma filmmaker Sterlin Harjo. The film will compete in the "Dramatic Shorts" film category at Sundance. "We're delighted with the quality of this year's short films," said Trevor Groth, Sundance Film Festival Senior Programmer. "These filmmakers are exploring new levels of storytelling and are using cutting edge techniques and technology. These films embody the creativity, spirit and freedom of expression that has become synonymous with the Sundance Film Festival." We wish Chad and Sterlin the very best with their film and promising futures.Faye Hadley 1/5/05
The MLIC Has New Coin-op Machines on 1st and 2nd floor
These new machines take paper money as well as coins: $1, $5, and $10. No need for copy cards. They can put in money and copy away!

THE CATCH: the machines will give back only coins for change. If you put in a 10-dollar-bill for a 10-cent copy, you will receive $9.90 in assorted coins.

The other little catch: the new Jamex machines will not read the old VendaCards. There will still be VendaCard machines on the third floor and one on the first floor for people with old cards.

There are $5 copy cards available for the new machines.Ruth Whitson 12/21/2004

National Jurist Magazine Ranks Mabee Legal Information Center as 33rd Best Law Library
National Jurist, a magazine for law students, ranks the Mabee Legal Information Center (MLIC) at The University of Tulsa College of Law as the 33rd best law school library in the country, according to the October 2004 issue.

The magazine used the most recent data from the American Bar Association to compare 183 law libraries. Scores were recorded in six categories: The number of volumes and the ratio of study seating were each worth 20 percent of the composite score; the number of titles, number of serial subscriptions, ratio of professional librarians and number of hours open per week were each worth 15 percent.

“This ranking puts the MLIC in the top tier of accredited law schools in the country, which is a credit to our experienced staff. Collectively our librarians have 162 years of library experience,” said Richard Ducey, MLIC director and associate professor of law at TU. “Also our wireless capabilities have been upgraded, making it possible for students to use their laptops anywhere in the building.”

The MLIC has 369,000 volumes in almost eight miles of shelving, a study seating capacity of 685, eight professional librarians and is open 110 hours per week. The $10.4 million, three-story addition to the College of Law doubled the floor-space and greatly increased the technological options available to users when it was dedicated in 2000. The new building’s 28,000 square feet brings the total square footage to more than 50,000.

The state’s other law schools, at Oklahoma University and Oklahoma City University, were ranked 93rd and 161st respectively.

MLIC Librarian Witnesses History in the Making
Native American Resources Amanda Proctor, TU NALSA President, with Faye at NMAI Opening Law Librarian, Faye Hadley, traveled to Washington D.C. on September 19 to witness and participate in the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) that took place on September 21. The day began with an opening procession, followed by a full day of activities on the Mall in the Nation’s Capital. The day ended with a wonderful concert MC’d by Oneida comedian, Charlie Hill. The concert featured Buffy Sainte Marie, Rita Coolidge and Indigenous. Faye toured the museum on Tuesday evening and again the following afternoon, and then attended an opening reception for charter members Wednesday night, but she still wants to go back and take in the all the exhibits of the NMAI after the initial crowds have died down. It was a fantastic experience to be there and to feel as if this librarian was a small part of such an historic event. Finding Law Reviews
Finding law review and journals just got easier! Many of our electronic subscriptions, such as Hein Online and LegalTrac, are now listed in the library catalog. If you search for a title such as “Harvard Law Review”, you will get a listing “Harvard Law Review Online.” Click on the title and it will pull up the record for that review. If you click on “Online access and full text availability,” it will take you to the Full Text Electronic Journals List. The list shows that Harvard Law Review is available from either Business Source Elite or Hein Online.

Another way you can search for electronic law review or journals is to go to the MLIC’s homepage, click on “Research Tools” then “Electronic Subscriptions.” “Law Reviews and Journals” is listed as an option. Click on that to go to the Full Text Electronic Journals List. You can search for a title, browse by title, or browse by subject.

Electronic sources are another way to obtain a copy of the article, but we still have many print titles available. If you have any questions or would like further clarification, please stop by the Reference Desk.Mira Greene 9/23/04

Security in the MLIC
The main doors to the MLIC will be locking down at 8:00 p.m. each evening starting Monday, Sept.13th.

This lock down is an added step for the security of students in the MLIC and for the staff member who works alone at the circulation desk.

Students, faculty and staff will be able to enter the library using their TU ID card. Flash your card close to the card reader which is located to the right of the door on the wall. After reading your card, the doors will disengage. If you have a problem, use the call button located next to the card reader. The call button allows you to talk with the circulation desk worker. If needed, the desk worker is able to override the system and let you in.Carol Arnold 9/13/04

MLIC LIBRARIAN TOURS CHINA
A Lou Lindsey at Feng Ducouple lucky McFarlin Library books took a two week trip to China: THE YANGTZE - NATURE, HISTORY & THE RIVER by Lyman P. Van Slyke and THE YANGTZE VALLEY AND BEYOND - AN ACCOUNT OF JOURNEYS IN CHINA by Isabella L. Bird! The books took an 8 day cruise of the Yangtze River, compliments of MLIC Associate Director Lou Lindsey who vacationed there in June with a grade school friend from California. They traveled 1,200 miles upstream from Zhen Jiang to Chongking, passing through the famous gorges which are being dammed by the gigantic Three Gorges Dam and will be forever changed by yet another 120 feet of water as the reservoir rises by year 2009.

The Chinese crew of 98, accustomed to a passenger load of 120, really spoiled the only 31 passengers aboard. They hailed from China, America, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Vietnam, Kenya, and England. On a side trip up a tributary, Lou watched monkeys playing on the banks of the river, and high in the cliffs she saw several 2,000 year old coffins. Lou also took a day trip to the spectacular Yellow Mountain which has inspired Chinese painters and poets for over a thousand years. She toured Sun Yat Sen's mausoleum in Nanjing, visited the ghostly town Feng Du, and on the exact day of the annual Dragonboat Festival she saw the hometown of the poet whose suicide drowning sparked the celebration. In Chongking, Lou saw the pandas happily eat their arrow bamboo and visited an art institute, and then flew to Beijing for two days to see the Forbidden City and, of course, journey to a portion of the Great Wall. It was a trip of a lifetime for Lou, and possibly the most exciting trip a TU library book has taken this summer!Lou Lindsey 7/2/04
