Featured Book: The Nine Jeffrey Toobin,
legal writer for the New Yorker Magazine and CNN legal analyst, has written a very readable book about the U.S. Supreme Court since the early 1990s. His sources are interviews with the justices and their law clerks resulting in lots of insider information on personalities and quirks of the justices. There is discussion of the behind the scenes events surrounding nominations of justices by Presidents Clinton and Bush. The book reveals how decisions are made and how in the years since 1992, the court has become more moderate in its legal philosophy. Toobin's insights on cases involving abortion, church-state relationship, death penalty, Bush v. Gore and social issues such as gay rights make interesting reading. Melanie Nelson 1/3/8
