Two Students Win National Library Week Prizes
Amy Gioletti and Librarian Richard ToddJohn Williamson and Librarian Richard ToddAmy Gioletti was the lucky winner of a $50.00 gift certificate plus an Evidence Map. Amy won her prizes for successfully completing the crossword puzzle designed by our own Professor Ducey. Also winning a prize was John Williamson who won not only a jar of M&Ms, but also two gift cards for area fast food. John won his prizes by coming closest to guessing the actual number of M&Ms in the jar. John's guess was 960 (there were actually 968 M&Ms in the jar). Thank you to all who participated in National Library Week.Faye Hadley 4/20/8**

Kendall Court 2008 -- Kendall Whittier Students arriveWhile sixty 5th graders from Kendall Whittier School were participating in the murder trial of Jack and the Beanstalk Friday, March 29th, put on as a mock trial by fraternity members of PDP, the other sixty youngsters visited three places in the MLIC, led there by librarian tour guides.  Sitting like law students in the high tech ADR Room, they learned about government websites including the Uncle Sam site.  Two alumni in full regalia, Amanda Proctor and Joel Mattson, sparked their interest in the Native American Law Center, and showed them many Native memorabilia.   Inspired by the sculpture of Abraham Lincoln, they learned more about his life and the immigrant sculptor who was selected by President Teddy Roosevelt to design the Lincoln head penny for the Lincoln Centennial.    Then the first group of sixty in the group that found Jack GUILTY had their chance to visit the MLIC before a pizza lunch in a classroom.

Native Justice PowWow a Rousing Success
The Third Annual Native Justice PowWow was a wonderful event and garnered praise and compliments from those who attended. The drum was strong and the dancers were many. It was particularly great to see Rusty Creed Brown (Head Man Dancer) on the floor with his own father, Kenneth Anderson Brown (Head Gourd Dancer). Also doing an excellent job were the other head staff: Bernice Delorme (Head Lady Dancer), Herb Adson (Head Singer), and Larry Tsosie (Arena Director). Finally we would like to extend a warm round of thanks to Mr. Archie Mason (Master of Ceremonies) without whom this event would not have gone as smoothly as it did nor would it have been possible at all. Thanks to all members of TU NALSA (especially Nicci Small), Oklahoma Indian Legal Services (this year's PowWow honorees), and to the entire Native community who came out to show their support for all of those who work to keep us safe and make sure that justice is being done in Indian Country. Yokoke (Thank you in Choctaw).Faye Hadley 3/3/8

Librarian's Article Published
Please congratulate MLIC law librarian Courtney Selby on her most recent publication in the Legal Reference Services Quarterly, a scholarly journal published by Haworth Press: The Evolution of the Reference Interview, 26 Leg. Ref. Servs. Q. 35 (2007). The article will be simultaneously published as a chapter in the monograph, Public Services in Law Libraries: Evolution and Innovation in the 21st Century. An abstract of the article follows: While the reference interview remains the vehicle whereby librarians are able to understand the information needs of users in order to assist them, the ways in which the reference interview is conducted have changed with time and technology. This chapter provides a brief history of the evolution of the reference interview, from the face-to-face transaction to the current trends of e-mail and chat software mediated reference interviews, and examines application of these current trends in virtual reference services. While the methods of conducting the reference interview have certainly changed, the ultimate goal of meeting the information needs of the user remains constant. 1-9-2007

Featured Book: The Nine Jeffrey Toobin, legal writer for the New Yorker Magazine and CNN legal analyst, has written a very readable book about the U.S. Supreme Court since the early 1990s. His sources are interviews with the justices and their law clerks resulting in lots of insider information on personalities and quirks of the justices. There is discussion of the behind the scenes events surrounding nominations of justices by Presidents Clinton and Bush. The book reveals how decisions are made and how in the years since 1992, the court has become more moderate in its legal philosophy. Toobin's insights on cases involving abortion, church-state relationship, death penalty, Bush v. Gore and social issues such as gay rights make interesting reading. Melanie Nelson 1/3/8
