Welcome the College of Law's New Admission Counselor for Diversity Outreach and LLM Recruitment

The University of Tulsa College of Law is pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Curtis to the position of Admission Counselor for Diversity Outreach and LLM Recruitment.  As you know, Larry is no stranger to the College of Law.  Larry began his career in the College of Law in January 2002 where he served as a Media Specialist.  Larry was soon promoted to Faculty/Staff Technologist where served as the lead specialist for faculty technology, classroom teaching technology and helpdesk support.  Larry also earned a BA in Arts Management from The University of Tulsa in December 2007.  In his spare time between classes and work, Larry interned at Theatre Tulsa, and served as Managing Editor for the Collegian and President of the Bi Lesbian Gay Trans-gendered Alliance at TU.  Larry is Native American and an active member in the American Civil Liberties Union and the Human Rights Campaign.  Larry has most recently served as the Assistant Director to the Performing Arts Center at Cascia Hall Preparatory School where he has been in charge of fundraising outreach and development, financial management, marketing, and human resources management.  We believe that his years of experience with TU, his marketing and technological skills, and his passion for diversity will fill a tremendous need in the Office of Admissions. We are delighted to have Larry on board in the Office of Admissions and we hope that you will welcome him back to the TU community.  Larry will begin his new position on July 1.

CLEO Summer Institute

Thomas Jefferson School of Law (San Diego, CA) along with the University of Denver Sturm College of Law (Denver, CO), have been selected to host the CLEO Summer Institute.  Each law school will welcome 42 future law students from across the country to our respective campuses for a six week pre-law school program.  The Thomas Jefferson Institute runs from June 8th to July 18th and the Denver Institute runs from June 15th to July 25th.

WHAT IS CLEO?

The Council on Legal Education Opportunity* (CLEO) is a non-profit entity of the American Bar Association and works to diversify the legal profession by providing legal education opportunities to minority, low-income and disadvantaged groups.  This summer marks CLEO’s 40th Anniversary! The Summer Institute is a six-week residential program for students who plan to attend law school in the fall of 2008 and is designed to prepare them to meet the challenges of the first year of law school.  The Institute offers a unique combination of intense skill building and testing through participation in substantive first year courses as well as co-curricular programming to develop professionalism and cultural competence.  I know what you’re thinking, a lot to tackle in 6 weeks!  Those who successfully complete the program become CLEO Fellows and may be eligible for additional training, awards, and scholarship grants during law school.

*Learn more about CLEO at http://www.cleoscholars.com

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

While many of the Summer Institute participants will already be admitted to law school, others will be working to secure a seat for the fall 2008 class.  This is where you fit in.  CLEO depends on law schools from across the country to interview, meet, and evaluate students to explore the possibility of them joining your fall class.  This is our second time hosting the Summer Institute, and with your participation and expertise, students matriculated at schools like Iowa, Duke, Denver, DePaul and Wisconsin.  We were even lucky enough to have some folks stay here at Thomas Jefferson.  Several attendees of our Institute, many who had less than traditional academic indicators of success, are currently on law review, excelling in legal advocacy competitions and leading student organizations at their law schools.

We encourage you to come to our respective campuses to interview students in person.  In the alternative, we can arrange for you to interview students by phone.  However, we are extremely flexibly and will try to accommodate an in-person interview.

Again, the Thomas Jefferson Institute runs from June 8th to July 18th and the Denver Institute runs from June 15th to July 25th.  Both schools are planning to have on-campus interviews the week of July 7th – July 11th.  Again, we are extremely flexibly.

Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair

The 4th Annual Heartland Diversity Legal Job Fair (HDLJF) will be held August 22-23, 2008, in Kansas City, Missouri. Students who are interested in becoming part of Kansas City’s dynamic legal community should strongly consider attending this event.  Students who will be returning to school in August and those graduating in May are eligible to attend the job fair, as employers will be interviewing for both summer and post-graduate positions.  The job fair is free for students.

The HDLJF is the result of Kansas City's leading law firms, legal associations, and corporate legal departments coming together to encourage law students to practice law in Kansas City. The HDLJF is designed to expose law students of diverse backgrounds to both traditional and non-traditional legal employers. In addition, the event is a great way t to learn more about living in this wonderful city.

The HDLJF will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center. It will kick off with an evening Welcome Reception on Friday, August 22nd.  The Saturday schedule includes a continental breakfast, interviewing from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and a luncheon at which participants will be greeted and addressed by Charlie Harris, current President of The Missouri Bar.

Please register as soon as possible. Students who register before June 6 will be entered into a drawing for exciting prizes. The final deadline for registering is July 1, 2008.

Spotlight

Fahed Al-Rawaf

Where are you from? I am from Saudi Arabia, and was raised in Damascus, Syria.

Undergraduate School: After finishing high school overseas, I attended the University of Arkansas, in Fayetteville, where I majored in International Business with an emphasis in Finance.

Activities / Organizations:
  • Articles Editor at the Tulsa Journal of Comparative and International Law
  • President of the International Law Student Association in 2006-2007
  • Secretary of the Hispanic Law Student Association in Fall 2007
  • Editor and Opinion Writer for Dicta, TU Law's newspaper Fall 2005 to Fall 2007
  • Legal Intern at the Boesche Legal Clinic's Immigrants Rights Project- Fall 2007

What do you like about TU Law? My brother is a TU Law graduate, and encouraged me to attend TU. I visited the campus, and really liked the atmosphere at the law school, especially the interaction between students and professors. I was also drawn to TU Law because of its program in International Law. Regionally speaking, TU Law offers more courses in International law, has a Law Journal specifically dedicated to International Law, and you can have the opportunity to study abroad in Europe, China or Latin America! Also, Professors teaching in the field of international law are national experts. And, nationally speaking, TU Law has one of the best programs in Energy Law and Native American Law. I took all these factors into consideration when applying, and I am very glad I took the decision of attending TU Law.
